New Jersey pharmacies must accept prescriptions from APNs

Posted 13 days ago

There is ongoing concern that some pharmacies are not honoring prescriptions written by APNs if the collaborating physician is not identified on the prescription pad. Executive Order #112 issued in April 2020, suspended this requirement, and remains in effect.

Executive Order (EO) #292, issued on 3/4/22, ended the public health emergency on 3/7/22, except for Executive and Administrative Orders, which continue to be suspended, per Executive Order #103. Therefore, EO #112, waiving APN Joint Protocol requirements for prescribing, continues to be in place indefinitely until Governor Murphy permanently ends them.

Rite Aid Pharmacy implemented a new policy, effective May 2nd, requiring that prescriptions issued by APNs must include the name of a supervising physician. Carolyn Torre RN, MA, APN, FAANP, Director of Policy for APN- NJ, advocated for the reversal of this policy to Executive Director of the Board of Pharmacy and the Director of the Board of Nursing. The Director of the Board of Pharmacy stated his commitment to address this matter directly with RiteAid, and they have removed the edit that they had in place.
