Posted almost 2 years ago by Janine Goulet in Legislation

Please read and seek the hyperlink in the following letter to assist AANP in moving this bill forward.

Dear AANP Members,

Thanks to your action, the bill to retire the career-long protocol cleared the committee on Thursday Dec 15th. The committee voted 7-0 to support the bill.

This is a strong first step, but the work to make this law will need ongoing support. It’s time to shift our attention to the full Senate to keep the momentum going.

Now we need to reach the full Senate. Click on the Act Now link below to speak out about how S.1522 would positively impact patient care in New Jersey. Are you not familiar with this bill? Read on to learn about the key provisions.

Act Now

What this bill would do: S.1522 seeks to modernize the nurse practice act and retire physician involvement in NP practice. As introduced, this legislation would:

  • Eliminate the requirement that an advanced practice nurse (APN) maintain career long joint protocols with a collaborating physician in order to be able to order medications and devices. An APN with more than 24 months or 2,400 hours of licensed, active, advanced nursing practice would no longer be required to have a formal collaborating agreement with a collaborating provider in order to prescribe medication.
  • Authorize APNs to sign, stamp, verify, or endorse a document which requires the signature, stamp, or verification, or endorsement of a physician.
  • Require APNs to complete 10 continuing education contact hours in pharmacology during each biennial period.

Are you ready to make your voice heard on this issue! AANP members can now use this link to contact their state legislators in the Senate to express enthusiasm for the positive changes this legislation can bring to your patients, their constituents!

Let’s keep the conversation going! Keep an eye on your inbox. AANP will share news and updates on these bills and others that could impact NP practice in New Jersey as they move through the legislative process.

Sincerely,

AANP Board of Directors
